Dr. Torrey was born at the old Pullman Memorial Hospital and lived in Pullman for several years until his mother remarried and relocated to Wilbur, Washington. “Dr. Devlin delivered me and he was quite upset because he had to leave a WSU/Oregon football game. I think we lost.” In Wilbur he adjusted to farm life and long school bus rides. His father remained employed at the agricultural extension at Washington State University until the mid-seventies and is now retired in Portland, OR. Dr. Torrey’s mother is a retired CPA and lives on the west side.

His college education began at Washington State University where he studied pre-physical therapy in the early 80’s. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. Dr. Torrey practiced physical therapy primarily in the Bay Area of California for twelve years before returning to receive his Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of the Pacific, in San Francisco, CA. From there, he went on to an associate position in Salem, OR with Dr. Randy Burningham. “Dr Burningham was a great mentor and taught me a great deal about ideal dentistry and complex cases.” Dr. Torrey took over the practice of Dr. Ken Gibson in 2003.

Dr. Torrey believes the best thing about being a dentist is all the growing technological advances that make practicing dentistry easier and more fun, and also being able to restore a person’s mouth to a level that was nearly better than original. “One of the most important lessons in dentistry is learning what not to do.” Longevity is the key in developing and implementing a treatment plan. He also believes in surrounding himself with highly competent, skilled and kind people. He stays active in various dental associations, and currently serves on the Peer Review Committee for the Spokane District Dental Society.

Dr. Torrey has been back living in Pullman since early 2003 and enjoys it immensely. “Pullman is as eclectic and diverse a little town as San Francisco is, in a lot of ways. The residents of Pullman are very educated and informed, farmers and professors alike.” He spends as much time as he can with his son Oliver, keeping him busy, entertained and healthy. He also enjoys fly-fishing, biking, hunting, community involvement and cooking. He is currently a board member of the Pullman Educational Foundation, President of the Lion’s Club of Pullman, a lifetime alumni member of WSU and a member of the WSU President’s Association. He has several brothers and sisters living throughout the Pacific Northwest.
